About Canning

City Of Canning

The City of Canning is a local government area in the southeastern suburbs of the Western Australian capital city of Perth, about 10 kilometres southeast of Perth's central business district. The City covers an area of 64.8 square kilometres and had a population of approximately 90,000 as at the 2016 Census.

A short-lived attempt to create a town trust for the Canning District lasted from 1843-1847, before it was dissolved. The area continued to develop under the control of a Central Board of Works until, in 1871, the Canning Road District was established under the District Roads Act 1871.

  • Bentley

Bentley is a southern suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) southeast of Perth's central business district. Its local government areas are the City of Canning and the Town of Victoria Park. Bentley is home to the main campus of Curtin University and Technology Park.

Prior to European settlement, the area was originally home to the Beeloo Nyungar people, whose territory extended from the Canning River to the Darling Scarp. The Beeloo hunted and fished in land close to the river, which was then forested with jarrah and marri trees, as much of the metropolitan area was at the time. In 2001, the ABS reported that about 3% of Bentley's population were Aboriginal.

  • Cannington

Cannington is a southern suburb of Perth, Western Australia. Its local government area is the City of Canning.

Cannington's name derives from the Canning River, which forms part of the southwestern boundary of the suburb. It was first subdivided in 1882, and a railway station was constructed in the 1890s opposite Station Street in what is now East Cannington.

For many years the areas of Cannington, East Cannington and Beckenham were known locally as "Waverley" and many buildings and businesses used the name Waverley to designate their locality, such as the Waverley Hotel and the Waverley Drive In Cinema. The origin of the alternative use of Waverley is designated to the Cecil Gibbs who first used it in naming the Waverley Hotel that was a distinctive landmark over many generations.

  • East Cannington

East Cannington is a southeastern suburb of Perth, Western Australia. Its local government area is the City of Canning.

East Cannington, previously part of Queens Park Road Board District and once incorporating present day Beckenham, was largely a semi-rural area, with only the area near the railway used for housing. In 1959, the suburb was gazetted as a postal district. Many farms and horse agistment properties once populated East Cannington until developers realised its potential in the 1990s and thus almost all available land has now given way to suburban housing.

In 1971, the suburb of Leeming was gazetted, although construction did not commence until approximately 1976, possibly as early as 1975. It was built in stages, with the area between Findlay Road and Gracechurch Crescent being built first, while the east, west and south were built in that order over the next ten years.[4] Many of the streets were named after original landowners in the agricultural district.
